Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves

By Baird Media

Yes, there was a time when DIY was the sole domain of men. Then came the age of reality TV and home improvement shows. This inspired women to take up DIY and take power tools into their own hands. Research has shown that ‘sisters’ are indeed doing it for themselves. Women are more than capable of fixing things around the house and starting projects that involve tools. Women have become confident and empowered and a recent survey showed that a staggering 88% of women would teach their daughters DIY.

Not only have women taken up the tools, they feel a sense of empowerment when they complete projects. Perceptions have clearly shifted in the last decade or two with research showing more than a third of women polled would learn DIY skills from scratch or would successfully complete projects on their own.

Gone are the days when you had to call a handyman when hubby was all thumbs. Women are smashing the stereotypes and in a recent survey in the UK, three-quarters of women said they would rather get their hands dirty than call out a handyman. One reason for this is the escalating costs of getting someone to come to your house to fix something. It is cheaper, in the long run, to invest in a few power tools such as a cordless drill kit and a circular saw, and get the job done yourself than handing your hard-earned money over to a stranger.

And, let’s face it, there is no feeling like the one you experience when completing a project, then standing back and admiring your handiwork. And what about the compliments you will get from your family and friends?

Time To Upskill Yourself, Ladies

But what do you do when you don’t know your jigsaw from your angle grinder? Easy, you attend a workshop. What better way to spend a morning than with other beginners who are enthusiastic to learn? Tackling a project will help you understand the basics of how the tools work and from there you can take the knowledge home and start work on your own.

The internet is filled with fun projects, such as easy-to-make birthday gifts or things to make for your home. It is time to empower and upskill yourself so that your time at home becomes productive. Involving your daughter (and other children) in the projects can be a great way to spend quality family time.
